Pets play a special role in many households, offering companionship, comfort, and real benefits for mental health and wellbeing.
That’s why Homes Tasmania has long supported responsible pet ownership, allowing our tenants to keep pets that are suitable for their home.
In fact, more than half of Homes Tasmania tenants currently share their homes with a pet – from cats and dogs to rabbits, birds and even fish – helping to create happier homes.
Now, under recently proclaimed changes to the Residential Tenancy Act 1997, renters in Tasmania’s private rental market can also enjoy more pet-friendly conditions. Blanket “no pets” policies are no longer allowed, meaning tenants can apply directly to their landlord for permission to keep a pet.
Homes Tasmania tenants have been enjoying these pet-friendly policies for many years. Guide and assistance dogs are always welcome, while other pets are assessed to ensure they can be safely and comfortably accommodated.
There are some situations where a pet may not be approved – for example, if the home is part of a unit complex with rules that don’t allow pets. And while we love animals, some simply aren’t suited to house or unit living – so unfortunately, horses and goats are off the list!
Tenants are responsible for caring for their pets, including feeding them, keeping them healthy, cleaning up after them and ensuring they are well behaved.
