Women escaping family and domestic violence across Tasmania will soon have greater access to safe and secure housing through Homes Tasmania’s new Safe Homes program.

Safe Homes program

The program will deliver transitional homes in communities across the state, providing accommodation and support for women with or without children who are ready to move beyond crisis housing.

By creating a pathway to secure housing, the program aims to reduce the risk of homelessness and help women rebuild their lives and move towards long-term stability.

Developed using Housing First principles, the Safe Homes program combines safe and stable accommodation with tailored support services for as long as they are needed. This approach recognises that access to secure housing is a critical first step in helping women recover from the impacts of family and domestic violence and establish a brighter future.

By helping women move more quickly from crisis accommodation into longer-term housing, the program will free up crisis housing for others experiencing urgent need, providing further benefits for the broader housing system.

Funding for the program has been secured through the Australian Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund Crisis and Transitional Accommodation Program (HAFF CTAP) and the National Housing Infrastructure Facility Crisis and Transitional program (NHIF CT). An initial $2.25 million has been allocated through HAFF CTAP to support delivery of the first seven homes, with additional funding applications currently in the final stages of approval.

The first four homes are expected to be completed in July 2026, with additional properties to be delivered over the following 12 to 18 months.

A Request for Tender process is underway to appoint a Tier 1 community housing provider to provide tenancy and property management across the program.

The Safe Homes Program represents an important investment in housing solutions that provide safety, dignity and stability for women affected by family and domestic violence, helping create stronger pathways to independence and long-term housing security
