Homes Tasmania is continuing to deliver more homes and improved support services for women across Tasmania, helping more people access safe, secure and comfortable places to live.
The April Dashboard reports that 4 854 households have been supported through housing programs since October 2020, including 63 households during April, contributing to the Tasmanian Government’s commitment of 10 000 social and affordable homes by 2032.
We are progressing new housing developments and upgraded community spaces that not only increase supply, but also support wellbeing, independence and connection.
In April, the Launceston City Council approved plans for a new 10-unit social housing development for women on the Housing Register. The development will include a mix of two- and three-bedroom homes, helping respond to local demand for social housing.
Built to the Silver level of the Livable Housing Design Guidelines, the homes are designed to support women of different ages and abilities to live independently and safely.

Also in April, the Hobart Women’s Shelter unveiled newly renovated communal spaces as part of a broader 15-unit expansion at the site. The upgraded areas include a recreation room, therapy room and purpose-built activities space, creating welcoming places for women to connect, recharge and access support. The expansion is being supported through $6 million from Homes Tasmania and $3.3 million from the Australian Government’s Safe Places grants program.
Homes Tasmania is also supporting additional short-term and transitional accommodation for young women in crisis through Karinya Youth Services. Karinya currently provides accommodation for up to six young women through a property head leased from Homes Tasmania. Work is now underway to add three additional bedrooms, each with ensuites, along with upgraded communal and living spaces, helping more young women access safe accommodation and tailored support.
These projects are part of broader efforts to increase housing supply and improve housing support for Tasmanians in need.
