Safe Homes is a statewide transitional housing program for women, with or without children, who are experiencing family and domestic violence. It provides a secure home out of crisis accommodation, with tenancy support to help residents establish stability and work towards suitable long-term housing.

The program is designed to provide homes that meet the needs of families, with larger two-, three- and four-bedroom properties located close to essential services, public transport and community facilities.

The Australian Government has allocated $15.7 million in funding to Homes Tasmania, through the Housing Australia Future Fund – Crisis and Transitional Housing program, to deliver 37 new homes across Tasmania for use in the Safe Homes program.

This funding builds on $2.25 million from the Housing Australia Future Fund – Crisis and Transitional Accommodation Program that is being used to build seven new homes, bringing to 44 the total number of homes being delivered through the program.

The first Safe Homes properties are expected to be completed later this month, with the first tenants moving in shortly afterwards. The remaining homes are scheduled to be completed over the next 18 months.

Each of the homes will be fully furnished with essential household items, helping tenants quickly establish their new home.

Tenants will initially be offered a two-year lease, with the option for the lease to be renewed if they have not yet secured suitable long-term housing.

Loreto Community Housing, an experienced Tasmanian community housing provider, will manage the properties and provide ongoing tenancy support.
