As she begins to settle into her new home with her daughter, Sophie is looking ahead with a sense of optimism.
With space to grow, and the stability she’s always wanted for her family, the future feels solid beneath her feet.
“After I had my daughter, I just wanted somewhere to settle down – somewhere that was ours where we could feel settled and stay in one spot,” Sophie says.
Sophie is one of the 930 Tasmanian households who have been able to buy or build their own home through Homes Tasmania’s MyHome shared equity scheme.
For a long time, buying or building her own home always felt beyond her reach.
“I just didn’t quite have the money,” Sophie says. “I’m doing it on my own and everything I wanted in the areas I liked was just that little bit out of reach.”
The turning point came when her mum mentioned the MyHome program.
“She told me about it one day and said I should look into it to see if it would work for me,” Sophie says. “And here we are today!”
Now that she has begun moving in, Sophie is already feeling the freedom and comfort that come with owning her own home.
“When you’re renting, you can’t really make a place feel like yours,” she says.
“You don’t want to put time or money into somewhere you might have to move out of. But here, I can start a garden, I can put in the time and effort on those personal touches.”
For Sophie, the MyHome program has delivered more than just a house.
“It means security and stability. And having a place for my daughter to grow up without having to move around is really great as well,” she says.
To help more Tasmanians build their own home, the MyHome price cap for newly built homes and house and land packages has recently been increased to $800 000, up from $750 000.
This means more new builds will qualify for MyHome, giving more people the opportunity to build a home of their own and boosting or Tasmania’s residential construction sector by encouraging more new home construction across the State.
