Social housing is a type of affordable and secure rental housing for Tasmanians on low incomes for people who are living independently or who need support.
Rent for social housing is generally calculated on 25 per cent of the household’s income up to a maximum of market rent but may include up to 100 per cent of Commonwealth Rent Assistance in community housing.
Supported accommodation generally charges a board payment that includes rent and a payment for the services provided to residents.
Social housing for people living independently includes:
- public housing – social housing managed by Homes Tasmania
- community housing – social housing managed by community housing providers
- Aboriginal housing – social housing managed by both Homes Tasmania and community housing providers and
- backyard units – provided for people who are living in social housing.
Social housing provided for people who need support includes:
- adult and youth supported accommodation and
- specialist disability accommodation.
