Crisis accommodation and material support is available if you are in a housing crisis and don’t have a safe place to sleep. It may include:

  • a shelter placement in a crisis accommodation service
  • emergency accommodation in a hotel, motel or caravan park
  • an overnight bed in a Safe Space facility.

Shelters

Shelters provide crisis accommodation with on-site support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Support staff at shelters can help you work towards your housing and other life goals.

Shelters are provided for young people, women with or without children, men with or without children, and families.

You can contact a shelter directly or call Housing Connect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on 1800 800 588.

Placements at shelters are prioritised based on each person’s needs and the needs of any accompanying children. If a shelter is unable to provide a place for you, they will refer you to Housing Connect for support and assistance.

The list of shelters in Tasmania can be found below.

You can also read more in the shelter accommodation fact sheet (PDF 145.3 KB).

Flexible funds

If you need help to avoid a housing crisis or help to find or keep housing, Housing Connect may be able to help you with flexible funds.

Flexible funds may be used for:

  • emergency accommodation in a hotel, motel or cabin if shelter accommodation is not available
  • a one-off payment to help you keep your current tenancy, for example if you need help paying a large and unexpected bill
  • paying for necessities, such as food or toiletries.

You will need to talk with your Housing Connect support worker about flexible funds when you apply for housing assistance.

Safe Spaces

If you don’t have anywhere to sleep at night and can’t find a place in crisis accommodation, you may be able to find a place at a Safe Space facility.

Safe Spaces can provide overnight shelter for you and your pets, as well as offering you a meal and services such as laundry facilities, lockers, charging stations and internet access.

Safe Spaces also operate a daytime drop-in service, where you can find other services you might need such as health care, alcohol and drug support, and mental health support.

You can contact a Safe Space directly or call Housing Connect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on 1800 800 588.
