Backyard units are modular homes that are installed in the backyard of suitable social housing properties. They are a secure, comfortable and affordable way to increase the capacity of a home.
If you live in a large household that includes a young person aged 15 to 25 years, a backyard unit may be able to help you by providing more space for your household.
The backyard unit program is designed to help reduce the risk of homelessness by allowing young people to stay connected to their family rather than moving out into insecure or unaffordable housing.
Fully accessible units are also available to suit young people with disabilities.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a backyard unit, your household must:
- live in a property that is owned by Homes Tasmania and be managed by any social housing provider in Tasmania
- have four or more people living in the home
- need the unit for an existing household member aged 15 to 25
- have space in the backyard of your home for a backyard unit.
To apply
Please speak to your social housing provider to apply for a backyard unit.
Approval for a backyard unit will be based on:
- your eligibility
- a recommendation by the social housing provider
- the availability of a unit
- the suitability of the site (eg is the backyard large enough)
- local council approval, if required.
Backyard units are provided for a set time period based on an assessment of household need.
When the time comes, your social housing provider will work with your household to plan the removal of the backyard unit and the next steps for your family and the young person.
