Housing Connect is where people go for housing assistance and support. It provides one assessment for all housing assistance options, from crisis accommodation to a long-term home.

How will I be assessed?

When you contact Housing Connect for housing assistance, you will receive a comprehensive assessment that will help Housing Connect determine your housing needs.

Housing Connect will talk to you about your situation including:

  • where you are living
  • your family situation and any other people who may need help, including children or people you are caring for or who care for you
  • what help you need.

Housing Connect will ask for information to assess your eligibility for housing assistance.

Proof of identity

You will need to bring proof of your identity before an offer of housing assistance can be made.

Income and assets

  • The income and assets of you and other members of your household will be considered when assessing your eligibility for housing assistance.
  • If you or a household member have no income, in most cases Housing Connect will assess you as though you are receiving a Centrelink benefit.

Number of bedrooms

The number of people living in your house, including their ages and gender, is used to determine the number of bedrooms you will be eligible for.

Health and mobility

Any health and mobility issues that might affect your ability to get or keep a private rental will also be considered. This is so people in greatest need receive housing assistance offers first.

If you have health and/or mobility issues, ask your health professional to complete the social housing health assessment form (PDF 608.3 KB).

Housing Connect will use this information to:

  • work out your housing assistance options you are eligible for and
  • help you apply for housing assistance.

Keep your application up to date

If your circumstances change – for example if your income or the size of your household changes – it may change the housing assistance options you are eligible for.

It is important to keep your information up to date so Housing Connect can match you to a home that suits your current needs.

To update your information, or to cancel your application, please call Housing Connect on 1800 800 588.
