Extensive damage from flooding has resulted in the former St Helens hospital building requiring demolition.

The former St Helens Hospital

The building at 27 Cecilia Street, owned by Homes Tasmania, was extensively damaged during flooding in February last year.

An insurance assessment shortly after the flood of the building identified extensive water contamination and associated mould growth.

The site has since been assessed as unsuitable for residential development.

Homes Tasmania does not intend to develop the site, and we are working with the Break O’Day Council on options for its future use.

In the interim, we need to make the site safe, and we have submitted a development application to demolish the building.

Subject to Council approval, we will commission a contractor to perform the demolition works.

We recognise that many local residents have a strong connection with the site. Community members interested in being kept up to date with our plans for the site can email HousingProjects@homes.tas.gov.au
