Construction has begun on a new 18-home development in Romaine that will increase the supply of social and affordable housing in North-West Tasmania.

Atkins Drive Romaine

Beardwood Pty Ltd began work on the new units in late June after being awarded the contract following a competitive Request for Works process through Homes Tasmania’s builders panels. Construction is expected to be completed in mid-2027.

The Atkins Drive development will provide 18 contemporary two-storey, two-bedroom units, offering a mix of social housing and affordable rental homes. Located on well-positioned land close to local services and amenities, the project will create more housing opportunities for Tasmanians while helping meet strong demand for affordable homes in the region.

Designed with comfort, safety and accessibility in mind, the homes will cater to people of all ages and abilities. They will be built to the Silver level of the Livable Housing Design Guidelines under the National Construction Code, ensuring they are practical and adaptable for a wide range of residents.

The homes will also deliver long-term benefits through high energy efficiency. Each unit will achieve a 7-star energy rating, helping residents reduce heating and cooling costs while enjoying more comfortable homes throughout the year and lowering environmental impacts.

The Atkins Drive development is part of Homes Tasmania’s ongoing work to deliver more medium-density housing in well-connected locations, making better use of available land while creating modern, affordable homes for Tasmanians.

The project received development approval from Burnie City Council in October 2025 and is funded by Homes Tasmania and the Australian Government through the Housing Australia Future Fund.

Once complete, the new homes will be managed by one of Tasmania’s community housing providers, providing safe, secure and affordable housing for people who need it most.
