Tasmania is “the standout performer” for the delivery of new social and affordable homes, a new report reveals.
The Revival of Social Housing Construction in Australia 2020-2030 report, released today, shows the number of social and affordable rental homes in Tasmania increased by 14.8 per cent between 2020-21 and 2024-25, ahead of all other states and territories and well ahead of the national average of 5.4 per cent.
The report, by Hal Pawson and Chris Martin from the University of New South Wales’s City Futures Research Centre, shows there were 2 176 new social and affordable homes built or acquired in Tasmania over that time, providing safe and affordable homes for thousands of families.
And Homes Tasmania is continuing to deliver more homes around the state for people seeking affordable, stable housing, with more than 1 300 social homes in our pipeline as we work towards our target of 10 000 social and affordable homes by 2032.
As at 31 December 2025, we have delivered 4 597 homes towards that target, with 5 403 homes in our pipeline of works. These homes are in all stages of delivery, from project planning and seeking pre-approvals, through to preparing land and active construction.
This ensures we can continue to deliver more new homes and more housing opportunities for Tasmanians.
