As NAIDOC Week 2025 draws to a close, we continue to celebrate a powerful milestone, 50 years of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture and resilience.

The 2025 theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy, celebrates not only the achievements of the past but the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, the legacy of our ancestors.
In recognition of the deep history and culture of Tasmanian Aboriginal communities, Homes Tasmania acknowledges their culture and their rights as the first peoples of this Land, the island of lutruwita/Tasmania. We pay our respects to our Palawa and First Nations colleagues who are part of Homes Tasmania and recognise their proud identity, culture and rights in the workplace.
Homes Tasmania has 337 dedicated properties for Aboriginal housing in our portfolio, with many more Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander households accommodated in the general housing portfolio.
Recently, the first 10 units under Tasmania’s Social Housing Accelerator Program (SHAP), with additional funding from Homes Tasmania were delivered on Flinders Island by Flinders Island Aboriginal Association Inc (FIAAI).
These units will be managed by FIAAI who provide cultural appropriate services and support for the Indigenous community on Flinders Island, including housing.
FIAAI manages over 70 rental properties across the island for Indigenous and community housing.
Homes Tasmania is committed to providing housing services that respond to the diverse needs of Tasmanians and are culturally appropriate. We are working the Department of Premier and Cabinet and the Closing the Gap Peak on a state-wide Aboriginal Housing Review. This will develop a creative, holistic, and culturally responsive state-wide Aboriginal Housing Policy and Action Plan and is part of Tasmania’s commitment to Closing the Gap.
