Housing Register review
The Housing Register is Tasmania’s single statewide system for assessing eligibility for social housing, prioritising applicants and allocating available homes.
The framework that currently supports these functions has been in place for more than a decade. During this period, Tasmania’s housing environment has changed significantly, creating a need to examine whether existing policy settings continue to effectively support applicants and housing outcomes.
Homes Tasmania is holding an open tender process seeking an independent consultant to review the Housing Register and assess whether the current policy framework remains fit for purpose and responsive to contemporary housing needs.
This tender will be open from Saturday, 3 October 2026 until 2 pm on Wednesday, 28 October 2026. RFT documents are available from the Tasmanian Government’s Tenders website: www.tenders.tas.gov.au
The review will examine four key areas:
- How housing need and demand are identified.
- How applications are assessed and prioritised.
- How available social housing is allocated.
- The governance, performance, data and systems supporting the Register.

SDA management options
Homes Tasmania is committed to ensuring Tasmanians with disability have access to quality, affordable and appropriate housing.
In November 2025, Homes Tasmania undertook a non-binding Request for Information to understand sector interest in the future management of all or part of our specialist disability accommodation (SDA) portfolio.
Exploring SDA management options will help improve the housing that is available for people with a disability and enrol SDA properties in the NDIS. Enrolling our SDA portfolio with the NDIS will also help Tasmania access available NDIS funding.
Residents of Homes Tasmania’s SDA properties are assured that their tenancy arrangements will remain in place, with rents and lease arrangements to remain unchanged. Residents’ support providers will not change unless the resident wants them to.

Homes Tasmania is now reviewing its SDA portfolio to better understand the condition, use and classification of properties and to inform future decisions about SDA management, investment and registration with the NDIS.
Further work to engage an organisation to register and manage the SDA portfolio has been paused until this review is complete.
