The Community Housing Growth Program (CHGP) is delivering more social housing for Tasmanians and improving the viability of community housing.
Under the CHGP, community housing providers receive grant funding from Homes Tasmania to build new social housing homes either on land they own or land that is owned by Homes Tasmania.
The program began in 2021 with an initial investment of $120.6 million from the Rebuilding Tasmania Infrastructure Investment COVID-19 Response.
This funding provided grants to 11 community housing providers to deliver 1 000 new social housing homes across the state, from our major cities to smaller, regional towns.
Further funding investments resulted in the first round of the CHGP providing a total of $165 million for the construction of 1 100 social housing homes. These homes are all scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.

Building on the success of the program, a second round of funding was opened in 2023, with a further 89 social housing dwellings committed for delivery before the end of 2026.
The projects are being built in areas with identified demand that are close to services, public transport, education and employment opportunities, and other necessary community infrastructure.
All homes delivered under the CHGP are required to meet Homes Tasmania’s Design Policy for Social Housing. The community housing providers delivering the new homes and managing the tenancies must comply with Homes Tasmania’s Social Housing Policy and the requirements of the Residential Tenancy Act 1997.
Where the homes have been built on land owned by Homes Tasmania, the homes will be retained for use as social housing for at least 40 years. Where the land is owned by the community housing provider, the homes will be retained for use as social housing for at least 30 years.
