Homes Tasmania is delivering more social housing for Tasmanians in need using modular construction.
Modular construction is innovative, flexible and responsive approach, getting Tasmanians into homes sooner with faster construction times.
Homes Tasmania uses modular construction to deliver:
- standalone dwellings or multi-unit developments for Tasmanians on the Housing Register
- backyard units, which are made available to large social housing tenant households with young household members aged between 15 and 25 years. They aim to help prevent the young person leaving home into insecure or unaffordable private rentals and potentially homelessness and keeps them connected to family while they develop independence. - Homes Tasmania’s Youth2Independence homes program with 20 homes across four sites for young people to live independently with an additional unit for an onsite manager providing 24/7 support. Read more about Youth2Independence (PDF 139.1 KB).

Six modular social homes in Shorewell Park
Homes Tasmania has delivered more than 250 modular homes across the state with a further 200 units in the pipeline.
Modular construction has numerous recognised benefits over traditional, onsite building methods. As the units are built in a factory environment, weather-related delays are greatly reduced, and different trades can work on the homes simultaneously, which significantly cuts construction time.
Production of modular housing uses a different workforce than onsite home construction. Homes Tasmania has partnered with various modular suppliers to deliver training opportunities for young Tasmanians looking to enter the construction industry, creating more jobs, increasing the supply of skilled labour and strengthening the local economy.
A fully accessible modular home
Modular housing also produces less building waste, as the factory production allows for more precise construction. Excess materials can be recycled and reused in the production of other new homes, leading to even greater sustainability.
Modular units offer contemporary design options and a range of sustainable features and finishes. The units are also designed to have an equivalent economic life compared with traditional home construction.
