Homes Tasmania provides affordable private rental accommodation for Tasmanians who have barriers to securing housing in today’s strong property market.
Homes Tasmania offers financial and non-financial incentives to encourage private owners to make their properties available for affordable rent.
Leases of up to two years are available in properties that are in a good location and are close to services and transport.
If you are eligible and allocated a property, you will sign a lease with Loreto Community Housing, a registered and experienced community housing provider.
Loreto Community Housing will be your tenancy manager and will help you throughout your tenancy.
Private rental properties are available across Tasmania for single people, couples and families.
If you are interested in applying you can contact Housing Connect on 1800 800 588 or visit one of its offices located in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie.
Read the Affordable private rentals fact sheet for more information.
There are two affordable private rental programs: the Private Rental Incentives program for people on low incomes and the Family Violence Rapid Rehousing program for people affected by family violence.
Funding available for a two-year period from 2024 to 2026 will provide initiatives for up to 550 homes across these programs.
Information for property owners
Homes Tasmania has improved the incentives available to property owners to make their properties available for affordable rent to eligible households on low incomes and with low or no support needs, including Tasmanians affected by family violence.
These incentives include:
- two-year lease terms with guaranteed median market rent
- fee-free tenancy services provided by Loreto Community Housing
- property management compliant with the Residential Tenancy Act 1997
- an additional annual incentive payment for owners of small properties (one and two bedrooms) of $4 500 per property.
Expression of interest
Homes Tasmania is providing incentives to property owners for an additional 300 affordable rental homes, making a total of 550 homes available for a two-year period from 2024 to 2026.
We are seeking expressions of interest from property owners who would like to help increase the availability of affordable rental housing by supplying properties that are close to major urban centres, transport services and amenities.
