Bethlehem House replacement
More men who are homeless will have safe, secure and modern accommodation with a new shelter planned for Hobart.
A new 50-bed crisis and transitional accommodation facility is planned for the site of the former Waratah Hotel.
The new facility will increase the capacity to assist men who are experiencing homelessness with 24 crisis beds, 18 transitional unit and eight units specifically designed for people with mental illness.
The design includes lounge areas, recreational space and a cafeteria-style kitchen and manual workshop training room for skills development.
Some people who are homeless sleep rough to avoid giving up their pets who are vital to their mental health and wellbeing.
The new Bethlehem House design will include two secure kennels and an exercise area for men with pets that need shelter.
The new Bethlehem House will complement the 24-bed supported accommodation facility that has been operating on site since the beginning of the year.
A total of 74 units of accommodation will be available once the new crisis and transitional accommodation facility is completed.
This new facility will replace the existing Bethlehem House, which is at the end of its economic life, no longer fit for purpose and has funded capacity to only help 32 men each night.
